Teacher guide reSolve: Algebra - Prisms and pyramids

This lesson engages students in investigating the relationship between the number of faces, edges and vertices of pyramids and prisms. Students construct their own 3D shapes, systematically record the properties of the shape and develop an algebraic formula to generalise the relationships discovered. The lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, discussion points and student handouts. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is useful for the Australian Curriculum content description in year 7 mathematics about introducing variables as a way of representing numbers using letters. Students investigate the relationship between edges, faces and vertices for a range of 3D shapes and generalise the relationship using a formula.
  • This resource also offers links to the Numeracy General capability as students visualise, sort, describe and compare the features of objects such as prisms and pyramids and identify trends using number rules and relationships.
